Tendulkar zooms to ICC ODI third spot after historic innings

DUBAI: Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday jumped three places to third in the ICC ODI batsmen rankings after his record-breaking double-century against South Africa while India are almost assured of $75,000 for ending the calendar year at number two position in the championship table.

Tendulkar (766 points), who returned undefeated on 200 in his 442nd appearance at Gwalior on Wednesday, now trails second-placed Mike Hussey (809) of Australia by 43 points with Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (827) strengthening his position at the top of the rankings after hitting a 35-ball 68 not out against South Africa in the second ODI.

It is Tendulkar's highest ranking in two years after he had reached second position following an unbeaten 117 against Australia in Sydney.

While Tendulkar has vaulted into third position, fellow opener Virender Sehwag has dropped one place to 10th position.

After missing a few matches, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir also slipped one and two places respectively to be at 13th and 21st. A player loses one per cent of his ratings points for every match missed.

In the bowlers list headed by New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, Harbhajan Singh is the only Indian at top 20 and the off-spinner retained his place at fifth.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship, India has all but cemented second position after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead against South Africa. It is now on 123 ratings points while South Africa has slipped to 115 ratings points.

The only way India can finish third at the annual cut-off date of 1 April is if it loses Saturday's match and New Zealand makes a clean sweep of the five-ODI series against Australia starting in Napier on March 3, which is highly unlikely.

In that scenario, New Zealand will jump to 123 ratings points while India will finish on 122 ratings points.

On the other side of the coin, if India wins on Saturday then irrespective of how New Zealand and Australia series pans out, India will finish second on 124 ratings points.

Australia has already sealed the number-one position with 134 ratings points and can only drop to as low as 128 ratings points if it loses all the five ODI against New Zealand

Tendulkar, Sehwag rested for Ahmedabad ODI


CHENNAI: Milestone man Sachin Tendulkar and explosive opener Virender Sehwag were rested while Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay and Karnataka speedster Abhimanyu Mithun were on Thursday included in the Indian squad for Saturday's third and final one-dayer against South Africa in Ahmedabad.

With India having clinched the three-match series by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead, the national selectors opted to rest the seasoned duo for the inconsequential match.

The selectors left out Uttar Pradesh pacer Praveen Kumar and Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar from the 14-member squad, with Mithun and Rohit Sharma replacing them.

Harbhajan Singh, who had opted out of the first two matches because of his sister's wedding, has also been rested, meaning that leg-spinner Amit Mishra is the only specialist spinner in the squad announced after a selection committee meeting.

Mithun, who was named in the squad for the first Test against South Africa in Nagpur, was left out from the second match in Kolkata without having played the match.

But the selectors opted to give him another chance at the expense of Praveen Kumar.

With Tendulkar, who created history by becoming the first cricketer to score a double century in one-day internationals, and Sehwag being rested, Vijay and Dinesh Karthik are expected to open the innings.

Tamil Nadu off-spinner R Ashwin, who is also a decent batsman, has been retained in the team along with Uttar Pradesh paceman Sudeep Tyagi. The two youngsters have not yet played a single match in the series and one of them could get a chance in Ahmedabad.

India will again miss the services of in-form opener Gautam Gambhir, hard-hitting middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh and pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, all of whom are recovering from injury.

India won the first one-dayer in Jaipur by just one run and then clinched the series with an emphatic 153-run victory in the second one-dayer in Gwalior which will be remembered for Tendulkar's stupendous unbeaten knock of 200.

ആത്മവിശ്വാസത്തോടെയാണ് സച്ചിന്‍ ഇന്നിങ്‌സ് തുടങ്ങിയത്. രണ്ടാം ഓവറിന്റെ മൂന്നാം പന്തില്‍ ബൗണ്ടറി നേടിയതോടെസച്ചിന്‍ എനിക്കരികില്‍ വന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു, ഈ പിച്ച് നിറയെ റണ്‍സാണ്.കാത്തിരുന്നാല്‍ മാത്രം മതി. ബൗണ്ടറികളെക്കുറിച്ചും ബൗളര്‍മാരെക്കുറിച്ചും ചിന്തിക്കേണ്ടെന്നും എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു. സച്ചിന്റെ വിലയിരുത്തല്‍ ശരിയായിരുന്നു. ഗ്യാപ്പുകള്‍ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും അനായാസം റണ്‍സ് നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു.

സച്ചിന്റെയും എന്റെയും ബാറ്റിങ് താരതമ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതില്‍ അര്‍ഥമില്ല. ടെസ്റ്റില്‍, ലഞ്ചിനുമുന്നേ സെഞ്ച്വറിക്കരികിലെത്താറുള്ള എന്റെ ശീലം കണ്ട് മുമ്പു ചിലരൊക്കെ എനിക്ക് വണ്‍ഡേയില്‍ ഡബിള്‍ നേടാനാകുമെന്നു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ, ഏകദിനത്തില്‍ 120-130 റണ്‍സാകുമ്പോഴേയ്ക്കും ഞാന്‍ ചില സാഹസങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുതിരും. അതാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസവും.

കഴിഞ്ഞവര്‍ഷം ന്യൂസീലന്‍ഡില്‍ 163 റണ്‍സില്‍ നില്‍ക്കെ പരിക്കു മൂലം പിന്മാറിയപ്പോള്‍ ഇരട്ടസെഞ്ച്വറി നേടാനുള്ള അവസരമാണ് നഷ്ടമായതെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. പക്ഷേ, സച്ചിന്റെ മറുപടി വ്യത്യസ്തമായിരുന്നു- ''അതെനിനിക്ക് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ എന്റെ പേരില്‍ത്തന്നെ വരും''. ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയക്കെതിരെ കഴിഞ്ഞവര്‍ഷം 175 റണ്‍സെടുത്തപ്പോഴും സച്ചിന്‍ ഇതുതന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാല്‍, ഗ്വാളിയറില്‍ അതു നേടിയപ്പോള്‍ സച്ചിന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു- ''വോ ലിഖ്താ ഥാ, തോ മില്‍ ഗയാ'' (എനിക്കു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നത് എനിക്കു കിട്ടി).

പത്തുപന്ത്രണ്ടുവര്‍ഷം മുമ്പ് സച്ചിനെക്കുറിച്ച് എല്ലാവരും പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നത് അദ്ദേഹം ഫോമിന്റെ ഉച്ചസ്ഥായിയിലാണെന്നാണ്. അന്നു ഞാന്‍ ടീമിലൊന്നുമില്ല. പക്ഷേ, അദ്ദേഹം ഓരോ മത്സരം കഴിയുംതോറും മെച്ചപ്പെടുന്നുവെന്നാണ് എന്റെ അനുഭവം. നെറ്റ്‌സില്‍ മറ്റാരെക്കാളും കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രാക്ടീസ് ചെയ്യുകയെന്ന ശീലം ഇപ്പോഴും മാറ്റിയിട്ടില്ല.

Sachin is better than Bradman, reckons Harbhajan Singh

Eulogising milestone man Sachin Tendulkar for his historic ODI double hundred, India's star off-spinner Harbhajan Singh reckons his illustrious teammate is better than Australian great Sir Don Bradman.

Harbhajan could not witness the record-breaking double century as he skipped the first two matches of the series due to his sister's wedding.

"I am short of words to praise Sachin. Some players compared him with Don Bradman. Although I have not seen Bradman playing but I am confident, he (Sachin) is better than him for which his records speak," Harbhajan said.

The off-spinner said Tendulkar's hunger for runs and amazing focus makes him an altogether different cricketer.

"Even after scoring 150 in the ODI, Sachin never looks tired and keeps his focus on the game. I have learnt a lot from him, be it on ground or in dressing room. I always observe how he prepares himself for every match," he said.

Tendulkar seems to be getting better with age

Every time Sachin Tendulkar goes through a purple patch - which he is enjoying at the moment - or sets a world record - which he did the other day at Gwalior - I am reminded of the now infamous headline carried by a national newspaper exactly four years ago. "Endulkar?'' it screamed on page one after a few failures in the Test series in Pakistan. This can now be summarily dismissed as sensationalism or a vulgarly irresponsible job by a deskman who tried to be too clever but was made to eat humble and distasteful pie.



Since then, Tendulkar has gone on to make many more hundreds in both formats of the game as well as a few thousand runs, while being an integral part of both the Test and ODI squads. It was always on the cards that someone would reach a double hundred in an ODI. After all, batsmen had got to 188, 189 and 194 and the front runners over the last decade would have been Sanath Jayasuriya, Adam Gilchrist and Virender Sehwag with MS Dhoni and Chris Gayle ranked as outsiders. Hardly anyone would have bargained for Tendulkar to break the 200-barrier.



No doubt he enjoys an enviable record in ODIs - most number of runs and most number of centuries and in both the important categories he is well ahead of the second placed batsman. His average - around 45 - and strike rate - about 85 - confirmed his status as a champion batsman and he did have a highest score of 186 not out. Still, with more aggressive batsmen around, it did appear that someone younger would probably be the one to first top the 200-mark in ODIs.



But there appears no limit to Tendulkar's boyish enthusiasm for the game, his insatiable hunger for runs and big scores and his indomitable spirit. These are the factors that keep him going, easily shrugging off the challenges posed by the young brigade. One has only to see him make a diving stop on the boundary to prevent the ball from going over the line to underline his commitment. And to think that he is just two months short of his 37th birthday and in his 21st year of international cricket!



With all due credit to Charles Coventry and Saeed Anwar it is fitting that one of the greatest batsmen in the game holds the record for the highest score in ODIs breaking a barrier in the process. It is a barrier that has defied the best players for almost 40 years during which nearly 3000 matches have been played. Some of the greatest have gone past 170, others went past 180 but the double century remained elusive - till the memorable evening at Gwalior on February 24 - a date that will no doubt go down in history.



Actually, given the early background, it does seem incredible that it took so long for a batsman to reach 200 in ODIs. As early as the 20th ODI, Glenn Turner hit 171 in the inaugural World Cup in England in 1975. Those were the days when matches were played on a 60-over basis and when Kapil Dev raised the bar to 175 not out at Tunbridge Wells eight years later in another World Cup game it was again a 60 over match. Vivian Richards raised this to 189 not out the following year, but that was a 55-over Texaco Trophy game against England. At that time it did seem that if a batsman would get to 200 it would be the peerless Antiguan. But he never did get to the mark though he hammered 181 in a World Cup match against Sri Lanka in 1987, by which time all ODI's were generally regularized at 50 overs.



And, so the tantalizing suspense continued as South Africa's Gary Kirsten could not get more than 188 not out in the World Cup match against UAE in 1996, and Pakistan's Saeed Anwar while surpassing Richards' long-standing record was dismissed for 194 in the Independence Cup match against India at Chennai the following year. Last year, a most improbable entrant made his way into the record books with the be-spectacled Coventry equaling Anwar's score while ending up with 194 not out for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh at Bulawayo. He, however, had the misfortune to finish on the losing side for the visitors inspired by a swashbuckling 154 from Tamim Iqbal overhauled Zimbabwe's total of 312 with 2.1 overs to spare. It must be a unique happening for a man scoring 194 not out to be sharing the man of the match award.



There was no question of the man of the match award at Gwalior the other day being shared. Like good wine, Tendulkar seems to be getting better with age. He has spoken of his burning desire to be a member of a World Cup winning squad. If he bats like the he did at Gwalior there is no reason why his ultimate cricketing wish would remain unfulfilled. Perhaps deep inside he also wishes for a triple hundred in Tests. If he can get 200 in a limited overs match there is every reason to believe that he can get 300 in a Test. And somehow it does seem perfect that the two greatest contemporary batsmen should hold the record for highest individual scores in ODIs and Tests breaking new ground in the process.
