Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) is reported to be considering purchasing 9X, the Hindi-language general entertainment channel owned by INX Media.
Launched in November 2007, INX said 9X was the first in a suite of planned channels. But the channel was hit by a TV industry strike and has failed to recover. As well as 9X, INX Media operates music channel 9XM but it is not clear whether that will be included in the deal. 9XM has grown to lead the music sector in India while 9X has failed to gain much traction in the market.
Zeel operates Hindi-language general entertainment service Zee TV but another general entertainment service, Zee Next, stopped broadcasting in 2009 due to losses.
INX was set up by Peter Mukherjea, ex-Star India CEO. He stepped down from his position as chairman of INX in March 2009.
