CNBC AWAAZ ‘UTTAR UDAY’ India’s biggest and most authoritative Initiative for empowering North India

New Delhi, April 12, 2010: CNBC AWAAZ, India’s No. 1 Business channel in partnership with Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car manufacturing company launched ‘UTTAR UDAY’, a pioneering initiative that provided a platform to the youth, the SMEs & other industries from across northern Indian states to voice their issues and concerns that are hindering growth. Through various youth focused camps & industry forums conducted across various cities of the northern states, Uttar Uday brought eminent industry and political leaders to understand the issues and views of youth and industry garnering a fresh perspective on the overall development of these states. This revolutionary initiative has concluded with UTTAR UDAY LEADERSHIP SUMMIT that brought India’s strategic leaders together to chart the roadmap for further development of northern India in New Delhi on April 9, 2010.

The leadership summit saw the presence of India’s top political leaders such as Mr. Salman Khushid, Hon. Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Minority Affairs; Mr. Nitish Kumar, Hon. Chief Minister of Bihar; Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Hon. Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh; Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank & Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission along with Mr. Sanjay Pugalia, Editor-in-Chief, CNBC AWAAZ sharing their vision for progress of India’s northern states.

Development of human resources, woman empowerment and sustainable economic growth were the important points of discussion amongst the political leaders in this summit.

Speaking on the development of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Hon. Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh commented, “Madhya Pradesh has shown a fast paced growth with current GDP at 8-9%. The state has primarily focused on infrastructure development, electricity generation, industrialization and women empowerment for its sustainable economic growth. This has resulted in development of nearly 52,000 km of roadway connecting various villages and towns, increase in electricity production to nearly 3100 megawatt, with an aim to be self-dependent by 2013. Our focus has been on agricultural reforms knowing that most of our population is financially dependant on agriculture, including loans with lower interest rates to farmers for their welfare and growth. We believe in industrialization that will help generate direct employment to younger population and women empowerment focusing on education of girls with schemes such as free education, uniforms and books. We are also committed to eradicate poverty, provide health facilities to all the people and enforcing law and order in the state.”

Further, Mr. Salman Khushid, Hon. Minister. of State for Corporate Affairs and Minority Affairs added,“ Since the available resources are depleting at a faster pace, we have to think of alternate means of developments in order to sustain old resources. If we keep consuming resources at its current pace there will be soon nothing left for us to sustain. We know for a fact that the central government also cannot offer everything for free because of our limitations. Also, the growth of budget fiscal deficit is a big concern. We will have to focus on development of infrastructure to sustain economic growth and the central government is providing best possible support to the states. Recently, we have chosen 21 underdeveloped districts for which the central government has sanctioned Rs. 3500 crores for their development.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nitish Kumar, Hon. Chief Minister of Bihar said, “The northern India has enormous growth opportunities with focus on infrastructure and human resource development. The younger population and manpower of Northern India is its biggest strength. If appropriate employment opportunities are created for them, we can achieve the desired growth. Also, for smoother growth and economic development of states, desired changes in central government policies, implementation processes, increase in financial aid, focus on women empowerment, generation of employment opportunities for the youth and eradication of poverty should be the main focus areas.”

Speaking on the development of Uttarakhand, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Hon. Chief Minister of Uttarakhand commented, “Uttarakhand has played an important role in the economic development of India. It is currently the 3rd fastest growing state of the country. Our focus is also to develop this state as a tourist attraction and spiritual hub of the nation along with the development of industries within the state, attracting foreign direct investment, women empowerment, employment opportunities for the youth, health and education. Uttarakhand will not compromise with its environment and natural resources as we understand that Global warming is a big concern for today. We are doing everything possible to save our forests and Himalayas. We believe that the government should consider giving some tax exemption to this state to invite private companies to set up their plants.

Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission said, “The need of the hour is the Public Private Partnership (PPP). The PPP model should be followed throughout the country for it’s over all economic development. The biggest strength of our country lies in its manpower and its biggest challenge is the development of infrastructure. We should focus on both these aspects. In order to develop skilled manpower, we need to focus on higher and technical education and development of various economic policies supporting development of manpower.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sanjay Pugalia, Editor-in-Chief, CNBC AWAAZ said, “CNBC AWAAZ has been in the forefront in reflecting the views of the Indian consumers. Through its path breaking initiatives, CNBC AWAAZ has raised concerns that affect the consumers, investors, and the common man at large. Following this institution, CNBC AWAAZ launched UTTAR UDAY; a ground-breaking endeavour that has given our viewers an in-depth view of North India, its contribution in the Indian growth story, the issues & expectations of the northern India’s youth & industry and the way forward for these states in order to give impetus to overall growth.”

UTTAR UDAY,  an unique initiative pioneered by CNBC AWAAZ has been a step forward in not only finding solutions for issues hindering the growth of Northern India but also develop a plan to convert it in a global business hub.
