Get ready to explore the interplay of the most spectacular getaways and innumerable distinct cuisines that the vast plains of Asia have to offer in Discovery Travel & Living’s two new Asia focused series PARADISE ASIA and CULINARY ASIA.

Spiked with sweet and spicy flavours, take a culinary voyage through CULINARY ASIA to discover the history and culture behind some of the region’s most iconic cuisines.  Full of exotic escapades, PARADISE ASIA will take you through an in-depth journey behind the design of some of the world’s best resorts and uncover their inspiration from the rich heritage of Asia.   The six-part series CULINARY ASIA will air on Discovery Travel & Living every Tuesday 8 pm starting November 10th and eight-part breathtaking series PARADISE ASIA will air every Tuesday at 9 pm starting 8th December.

Today, Asian cuisine’s distinct and complex flavours feature prominently across chic restaurant menus and their once foreign-sounding names are now on the tip of every diner’s tongue. Be it Korean Kim Chi, Thai Tom Yum or Goan Curry – their unique and complex flavours are relished by many but most are oblivious to how, why or even where these delicious dishes originated. CULINARY ASIA will chronicle the culture and identity of a nation through its culinary history, revealing surprising origins and intriguing stories of people and places behind iconic dishes such as Japanese sushi, Korean kim chi and Taiwanese oyster rice noodles. Each episode will take a look at famous dishes associated with a particular country and explore the intricate mix of culture that has defined these favourites, despite colonial rule and external influences.

The grandeur series PARADISE ASIA will take viewers beyond the standard fare of a tourist-oriented programme, on an in-depth exploration of lavish and elaborate designs of some of the Asia’s finest luxury hideaways. How are these lavish retreats designed? More importantly, how do they relate to the history and culture of their locale? PARADISE ASIA will discover the inspiration behind the lavish retreats which are an epitome of the history and heritage of Asia.  From the tropical rainforest of the Golden Triangle to the crystal blue beaches of Maldives, these luxurious resorts are as varied as the culture found within the region.  From Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi in Chiang Mai, Amanpuri and Banyan Tree in Phuket to Mughal styled Aman Bagh and Samode Haveli in Rajasthan, the viewers will get a chance to take a trip down and uncover the influence over the modern residences that dot around these ancient monuments.  PARADISE ASIA will enter the realm of restored palaces in Rajasthan such as Samode Palace, Devigarh resorts, Oberoi Udaivilas and learn the history behind their former royalty abode. Witness the fusion of modern art decoration and traditional Jaipur architecture in these resorts.

Episode Synopsis – Culinary Asia

Step into Thailand and discover the importance of achieving a balance between the five fundamental flavours in each dish. Revel in haute cuisine from the royal kitchens of the Mughals in India and learn about the influence of religion and the British rule. In Japan, witness how the Japanese define their contemporary cuisine through ingenious recreations and reinventions, led by the principle of “Kodawari”. Feel the soul of high-tech haven Korea through a fiery and sassy gastronomic trip. Follow the transformation of Taiwan’s cuisine as we embark on a journey to trace the footprints of change. Savour the fusion of flavours that is Malaysia, an exotic hodge-podge of different races and cultures, influenced by migrants and colonial rule.  With its treasure trove of culture and tradition, Asia’s cuisine has much to offer. CULINARY ASIA reveals the innovations and inventions that Asian cities have adopted to bring its cuisine to greater heights.

Episode Synopsis – Paradise Asia

Uncover the history and culture of CHIANG MAI through the Four Seasons Resort and be amazed by the intricate architecture of the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi, the resort close to being a city on its own. Visit the first resorts of each of the world’s finest hotel chains, Aman Resorts and Banyan Tree in PHUKET and see how a land thought impossible to rehabilitate, got a new life. Discover how nature’s five elements inspired renowned architect Cheong Yew Kuan’s design of the five residences at the Como Shambhala Estate in BALI. Relive Chinese history through the restored ancient villas of The Red Capital Ranch and take a peek at Avant-Garde BEIJING through the Commune. Take a journey through the majestic cities of Rajasthan and a look at the finest resorts- Oberoi Udaivilas and Devi Garh in UDAIPUR, 150 year old Samode Palace and Samode Haveli in JAIPUR.
