UTV World Movies, India’s pioneering international movie channel brings to you April Movie of the Month- The Counterfeiters. An intelligent, intense thriller based on the real-life memoirs of Adolf Burger, it is the first Austrian film to win the Academy Award (Best Foreign Language Film Category 2008). The multi-award winner German blockbuster is based on Operation Bernhard, a secret plan by the Nazis during World War II to destabilize the United Kingdom by flooding its economy with forged currency.
While there is no shortage of holocaust films from around the world- The Counterfeiters is unique because it blurs the boundaries between good and bad. The film defies the conventional treatment of a holocaust film – positioning the lead Jewish character as a hedonistic master criminal who is not shy of helping the Nazis. The key conflict comes when the character has to choose between his group’s survival and the anti-Nazi plot at the cost of his friends’ lives.
