Mumbai, February 5th, 2009: This week, NDTV Lumière brings you hope and compassion amidst adversity in the extraordinary poetic tale ‘Blackboards’. Directed by Samira Makhmalbaf, ‘Blackboards’ was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 AFI Fest and was screened at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival. Seating and entry is free at ‘Zenzi Lumière’.
‘Blackboards’ is a story about a group of displaced teachers who carry their blackboards strapped to their backs and wander from one village to another looking for much-needed pupils with whom they wish to share the power of knowledge. Following an attack from an army helicopter two teachers, Said (Said Mohamadi) and Reeboir (Bahman Ghobadi) separate from the group and try to find ways in which they can sustain themselves. Powered by naturalistic performances from a troupe of largely non-professional actors, Blackboards is a film with a devastating undercurrent of cynicism, and is one of the most original and potent movies you have ever come across.
